Tape Op Magazine

I am the founder, co-owner (with publisher John Baccigaluppi), and Editor of Tape Op Magazine, which began publishing in April 1996. Tape Op has the largest circulation in the world of a magazine devoted to music recording. I’ve interviewed famous (and less famous) people making records all over the world. Print subscriptions are free in the US, and PDF versions are free anywhere in the world.

Freelance Writer

I have done technical consultation for several books, including Richie Unterberger’s Won’t Get Fooled Again: The Who From Lifehouse to Quadrophenia and Matt Lemay’s Elliott Smith’s XO book for the 33 1/3 series of album examinations. In 2011 I wrote a short op-ed piece for the Washington Post. I’ve written a piece for the book Taking Punk to the Masses: From Nowhere to Nevermind about Elliott Smith’s piano. Since 1984 I have written for various magazines and newspapers, though almost all are now defunct! Titles include: Sound Choice, File 13, You Could Do Worse, Option, Chico News & Review, Tonic, Sound Collector.
